Thonet Bike by Andy Martin
Furniture-maker Thonet has teamed up with London based designer Andy Martin to develop a concept road bike using their steam bending process. The entire bike, except for the carbon fiber wheels and drive chain, will be made from swooping lengths of white beech wood. Even the seat is made from a shaped piece of wood, although thankfully, it’s attached with reinforced metal shock supports to the frame.
In order to keep the clean lines of the bike, it will only be available as a single speed and will not come with any brakes (leg resistance braking only). A variety of gear ratios will also be available.
We’ve seen a lot of these concept ideas come and go, but rarely do they make it to market. Nevertheless, Andy Martin has stated he intends to sell the Thonet Bike through his studio website. Although with the absurdly prohibitive price tag of $70,000, it’s unlikely this bike will see much act out on the streets, if any.
