Artist Shepard Fairey has returned to his native town of Charleston, South Carolina in preparation for his latest show at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art. The unique pairing of Fairey and the legendary Jasper John’s work will allow for connections to be made between both artists’ affinity for graphic and advertising elements in their practices. To up the ante for the exhibition opening, Fairey has been installing multiple public murals around Charleston. He has hit the Francis Marion Hotel with the OBEY icon, painted a large James Dean homage on a downtown wall, and churned out some new prints since his arrival. His show, set to open this Thursday, features new works in neon that speak to ‘the detritus of the American Dream.’ Visit the Halsey Institute site to learn more about Fairey’s upcoming show.
