Interview: Catching Up With Cream Team Chicago

unnamed-2

We recently caught up with hip-hop duo Cream Team Chicago, who are prepping the release of their upcoming Key2Life EP. They just dropped the lead single, “Welcome To Chicago.” Check it out here and get to know CTC better below.

Mechanical Dummy: So, you guys are from Chicago and you’re a duo. Sounds like you have a lot in common with The Cool Kids, who just announced they’re making a comeback. Seeing as you guys just opened for Sir Michael Rocks in Kentucky last month, days before the reunion announcement, is it safe to say you guys are fans and excited by the news?
Cream Team Chicago: Absolutely. They created great music and have marked their territory in the industry. It’ll be exciting to see what they come up with next.

MD: Would you also say that The Cool Kids were an inspiration?
CTC: Definitely an inspiration. They got Chicago blood and they’ve grown a phenomenal fan base.

MD: Speaking of inspirations, who else would you guys say make the cut for yours?
CTC: UGK and Outkast-both duos were at the top of their game. Showing how two different personalities can blend together into one historic sound. Jay Z and Lil Wayne – We would label them the pioneers from our era. They created empires that control the music industry today. Longevity in the game.

MD: Where did the name Cream Team come from?
CTC: The name Cream Team came about when we were in high school. We were always together and just wanted a name that identifies us as brothers and a unit versus Donnie Macc and Turk separately. Our acronym for C.R.E.A.M. is Chicago Represents Everything About Me.

MD: How did it feel having your single “Fly” debuted on Power 92.3? What was the reception like?
CTC: It was a huge milestone and fueled us even more to keep pushing to be in regular rotation for all radio stations. To see all of the people show us so much love for the song was surreal.

MD: What can fans expect from the first project?
CTC: They can expect to hear music inspired by our real lives; not what you would expect from 2 guys from inner city Chicago. Not falling into a lane, but creating one. You’ll hear anything from dancehall to R & B to dope lyricism.

MD: Any noteworthy collaborations?
CTC: Us being a duo, we are the collaboration. We didn’t want features on our first project because we really want to build an organic fanbase.

MD: Who are you guys listening to these days?
CTC: Our top 5 that we’re listening to are, Chance the Rapper, J Cole, Drake, Future and Migos.

MD: Any thoughts on Kodak Black saying he wants to fight Lil Wayne, or Lil Yachty talking trash about B.I.G. and Pac?
CTC: We think it’s all for publicity. You take shots at the greats by trying pulling them down to your level. Success brings ego, some can handle it, some can’t.

MD: It’s festival-lineup announcement season. If you guys could pick any festival to perform at, which would you choose and why?
CTC: SXSW. It’s one of the biggest festivals for independent artists or Lollapalooza in Chicago, which pays homage to the old Woodstock festivals before our time.

MD: Are there any future tour plans that include festivals right now?
CTC: Yes, We’ll be performing at SXSW in Texas this March. We’ll be previewing music from our debut EP Key2Life that’s about to drop. Putting together an exciting show for new fans!
