The city of Detroit will soon see a massive 17-foot sculpture by KAWS titled “Waiting” in front of Campus Martius Park in downtown. The artwork, which depicts a child and a parent in KAWS’s signature “Companion” series, is comprised of over two tons of bronze and was given a matte black sheen before being assembled in the business district. “Detroit has an incredible cultural history, and I’m proud to have my work permanently displayed in the city,” quoted KAWS in the news release.
The sculpture was acquired by the Library Street Collective for philanthropists Dan and Jennifer Gilbert who have been placing art throughout the Midwestern metropolis via their Detroit Art Collective. A public viewing with the artist will be held by the gallery on Tuesday, May 22 from 6-8 p.m. at One Campus Martius.
